Dutch and the milkmaid
This reminiscing me an event which happened eleven years ago, when I was 9. My class had English lesson with teacher Mala. She taught us on Colonization of Malaya.
We all knew from history that the colonization started in 1511, where Melaka was conquered by Portuguese. Then the teacher drew a timeline which illustrated like this;
? (1511) - ? (1641) - ? (1824) - ? (1941) - ? (1946)
So all of us said in 1511 it was Portuguese. Next, in 1641... some students said "Belanda!!" whilst some kept quiet as they didn't know the word Belanda in English.. The teacher said, "Yes it was Belanda but there's a word for Belanda in English. Who knows?"
...........*noise*
Then I said "Dutch!!". I thought I say that word not so loud (back then, I was a very shy person. Really! pfft..) but somehow the teacher heard my answer. She looked at me and said "yes, it's Dutch". My friends in front of me asked, "How did you know that?" I just smiled and told them my mom once told me about it.
Actually it began with my curiosity as I saw a Nestle product of sweetened milk and I asked my mom, "mom, why this woman is bringing a pail of milk on her head?"
My mom said "this is the milkmaid from Dutch. You can see the same woman illustrated in other brand such as Dutch lady."
From that, I learned that Belanda in English is Dutch.
Thanks to my mom, my best teacher of all.
